The Nosy Mangabe reserve is a small island along the coast of Maroantsetra. A great island, with every step you took, you saw something. Tens of different kind of frogs, the mantilla laevigata, brokesia’s (the smallest chameleons), several kinds of lemurs and the aye-aye. The aye-aye is a nocturnal lemur and was almost extinct, as the local people saw them as forerunners of the death and killed them straight away. But at this inhabited island, where we were allowed to camp, they are starting to increase steadily again. As they are nocturnal animals and live high up in the trees, we did not succeed in getting a good picture of them.
